Trump Administration Ready to Dispatch Scores Law Enforcement to San Francisco

The Trump administration seemed ready on Wednesday to send scores of federal agents to the northern California for a major border security initiative, sparking criticism from California leaders.

Specifics of the Mission

Information of the mission were gradually becoming clear, but it will allegedly feature more than 100 law enforcement personnel, according to reports. The officers are expected to begin utilizing the US Coast Guard base in the East Bay, facing San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether national guard troops would participate.

Official Backlash

The mission is the result of months of threats by the administration to take action against the progressive municipality. California’s governor Gavin Newsom denounced the action, calling it “taken directly from the authoritarian playbook”.

“He dispatches unidentified officers, he deploys Border Patrol, he deploys ICE, he creates anxiety and fear in the neighborhood so that he can claim credit for handling that by sending in the military forces,” the governor stated. “This is no different than the firestarter extinguishing the inferno.”

City Planning

San Francisco is the most recent metropolitan center targeted by the federal effort of widespread apprehensions. The deployment is likely to cause a showdown between the White House and city officials who have pledged to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for an extended period for Trump to make good on repeated threats to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader reiterated that the city was prepared.

“For months, we have been expecting the possibility of some kind of national intervention in our city,” declared the leader, noting that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s assistance to our newcomer populations, and guarantee our offices are prepared prior to any national intervention.”

Constitutional Context

Regardless of judicial disputes to deployments in a several municipalities, including Illinois, the Pacific Northwest and LA, Trump has claimed “absolute authority” to send the national guard in cities, citing the federal statute which allows presidents certain rights to deploy troops on domestic land.

Community Reaction

The governor, who was formerly as San Francisco’s city leader – had vowed to step in “immediately” to a mission in the city. “The concept that the national administration can send forces into our cities with no legitimate cause based on facts, no monitoring, no accountability, no respect for state sovereignty – it constitutes an attack on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including civil rights groups formed in the first Trump administration, have prepared to swiftly gather a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.

Local Impact

In San Francisco’s Mission area, a mostly Latin American neighborhood, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her residents had been preparing for this moment. “The moment that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color are afraid to go outdoors without the concern of national personnel targeting based on race and detaining them, the time when parents stop sending kids to school, are too scared to go to the supermarket or medical provider,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is fundamentally a halt the extent of which we have not experienced since the pandemic.”

State Troops Status

Approximately three hundred out of 4,000 state state soldiers continue under national command under an command from Trump. Approximately two hundred of them had been transferred to Oregon, where they were staying in standby in the midst of a legal battle over their mission.

This week, Newsom said he had summoned the state military personnel under his control to manage charity kitchens during the federal closure.
