Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Attack Dies
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response when she finished her shift at about 22:00 Friday night.
She described the scene as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Another individual, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
